CBD 101
Cannabidiol (CBD) oil has been saturating news circuits and social media feeds for some time now. What seemingly began as a fad, continues to gain in popularity. However, CBD is still not fully understood by many. Here at STANDwellness we are always getting the same questions, what is CBD and how does it work?
Taking it back to basics, marijuana and hemp are both part of the Cannabis plant species. These plants contain compounds called cannabinoids. The cannabinoid compounds are different from THC present in marijuana and are non-psychoactive. CBD will actually reduce the effects of THC and can blunt the psychoactive actions. These cannabinoids are widely available in the human body and can be found in many other food sources including breast milk, flax seeds, kale, and broccoli! The human body is full of receptors for the cannabinoid molecules. They can be found on most organs, our skin, nervous system, and throughout the digestive tract. Cannabinoids will bind with the CB1 and CB2 receptors on cells to promote proper function. This can enhance the immune system, reduce inflammation, promote pain relief, and reduce stress. Additionally, because the cannabinoid molecule can cross the blood brain barrier, it is useful promoting brain health.
Furthermore, CBD can make neurotransmitters like serotonin more accessible to neurons, which helps to balance moods and reduce stress. Rather than stimulating the production of any one neurotransmitter, CBD is adaptive and supports balance by promoting proper function, rather than forcing change. CBD can also stimulate the growth of cells in the brain, specifically in the hippocampus, which is an area that tends to shrink in the brains of those experiencing anxiety and depression.
Overall the benefits of CBD are immense. From promoting general health to alleviating symptoms of chronic disease, it can be beneficial for practically everyone! It is important to keep in mind that the effects of CBD are cumulative and seeing results may take a few weeks. CBD impacts each person differently depending on their level of inflammation and the presence of acute or chronic illnesses. Luckily, because CBD is fat soluble, the body is able to store it in the body for weeks. The best way to begin incorporating CBD into your lifestyle is to start slow, just a few drops and gradually build from there.
