MCT Oil: The Wonder Fat

MCT oil, every time I say it to someone I get the same response, “what is that?” MCT stands for medium-chain triglycerides, which are fats in most cases from coconuts. These triglycerides are shorter than most dietary fat, which means they do not need to be digested in the same way, making them a rapid source of energy. Additionally, MCT oil has been shown to boost weight loss, brain function, and promote a healthy gut biome.

Promotes weight loss

MCT oil is one of the best examples that fat does not make you in fat. In fact, it can do the opposite. MCT oil has been shown to improve feelings of fullness by releasing two “full” hormones as well as blunting the rise in glucose in the blood stream. Additionally, it has been shown to increase energy expenditure leading to greater fat losses.

 Improves brain function

As mentioned above, the short chain length of MCTs allow for fast absorption and the ability to bypass many digestive processes. MCTs go straight from the gut to the liver without the use of bile, they then are converted into ketones, which then travel to cells for immediate energy. It is important to know that these ketones can easily cross the blood brain barrier to fuel neurons. This quick and clean source of energy has been shown to improve focus and help combat brain fog.

 Supports proper gut balance

MCT contains caprylic, capric, and lauric acids, which are all useful in reducing the growth of yeast and pathogenic bacteria. It has been shown to be particularly effective in reducing the growth of Candida albicans by 25%. Adding MCT oil can be helpful in maintaining a proper balance within the gut biome by keeping the negative bacteria in lower numbers.

Overall, MCT oil is a great addition to your morning smoothie, coffee, or salad dressing. Always opt of a non-GMO oil and never ever heat or cook with it because the fats will oxidize and become harmful to your cells! My favorite way to enjoy MCT oil is in my morning coffee, see my daily recipe below. Enjoy!

MCT Coffee

1 cup freshly brewed coffee (I use Bulletproof French Kick)

1 TBS MCT Oil (I use Bulletproof Brain Octane Oil)

1 scoop collagen powder (I’ll use any brand as long as its grass-fed and organic)

1 sprinkle organic cinnamon

Add all the ingredients to a blender and blend on high for 1 minute. Enjoy immediately
